Job Interview Skills How To Get The Job

Job Interview Skills How To Get The Job3 Job Interview Skills How To Get The Job

A great resume is not enough to guarantee getting a great job. If you are up for interview then you need to outshine your competitors by developing your interview skills. Your skills will only get you so far; neglecting any one of these points could be interview suicide.  Remember that the way you present yourself to the interviewers represents the way that you will deal with their customers and staff if you are hired; so it is important to get it right!
Turn your phone off
This one is self-evident, it is rude and distracting.
Do not chew gum
There is no need and many interviewers do not like it.
Be polite to every member of staff you meet
In my previous job I often saw interviewees during their time at the building and my opinion about applicants was always asked for.
Do not use slang or profanity at any point
Although some people are comfortable with it, it is just inadvisable as the majority of people don’t like it.
Do not show up too late or too early
Be in plenty of time to find the building and get your bearings but make your entrance only about 10 or 15 minutes before your interview.
Practice your handshake before you go
A confident but not overpowering handshake implies good things about you.
Make eye contact with your interviewer
But don’t stare. Try to be personal without being overbearing.
Communicate with an equal style to your interviewer
If they are formal, then you must be too.
Do not talk negatively about your previous employers
You will give the impression that you are bitter and that you have a bad attitude, they do not want to hire a malcontent. If you need to talk about these issues construct positive messages out of your bad experiences.
Research the company
Think of some intelligent questions to ask, know about the competition and issues in the industry.
Dress smartly
Wear clothes that are appropriate for the company.  It is generally better to over dress than under dress if you are unsure.  Key rules are no short skirts, minimal cleavage, no trainers, ironed clothes, subtle colours and clean shoes.
Be clean
Make sure you are freshly washed, you have neat hair, fresh breath, clean fingernails and don’t wear too much perfume or aftershave. You should also avoid smelling of smoke, as many people don’t like it.
Give full answers
But don’t ramble on. An interviewer does not want to know every detail about you, nor will they be impressed by one sentence answers.
Control your actions
Don’t fidget, slouch in your chair, bite your fingernails or appear nervous. Be as cool, calm and collected as possible.
Sit only after being asked
Be respectful and not presumptuous about the form that the interview will take, you may not be staying in that room.
Relax and try to develop a rapport with your interviewer.  Don’t flatter them or try to over ingratiate yourself, but be open and honest and try to explain why you are going to be good for the job and for the company.  If you feel the interview went well at the end you could ask if the interviewer felt satisfied with your interview and whether they thought that you would be a good fit for the job. You may get an answer you don’t like, but they are likely to be impressed by your direct, inquisitive approach.
